The Faith-Based Information Sharing and Analysis Organization (FB-ISAO) is pleased to announce a new channel on FB-ISAO Slack dedicated to safety and security information for Pre-K-12 schools, institutes of higher education, and other educational institutions and childcare programs (“schools”). FB-ISAO members now have a place to review and exchange resources, tools, emerging and best practices, sector and news updates, and communicate with individuals from houses of worship and faith-based organizations.

By sharing information on a range of topics, members can learn about the challenges and solutions to improving school safety. For example, members have shared information regarding upcoming webinars from…

When the Faith-Based Information Sharing and Analysis Organizations was stood up in June of 2018, we had many plans for how we can meet the mission of providing members with information, analysis, and capabilities to help reduce risk while enhancing preparedness, security, and resilience.

Hostile Event Preparedness Discussion-Based Workshops was at the fore-front of those plans. It took some time to get there! In the early fall of 2019, the Faith-Based Information Sharing and Analysis Organization (FB-ISAO) announced the start of a planning processes for a 2020 Workshop Series focusing on Hostile Events Preparedness. Collaboration with U.S. Government partners, state and local government, and law enforcement partners from around the United States formally starting in July 2019.

The 2020 Hostile Event Preparedness (HEPS) Workshop Series provided a forum for faith-based and charity organizations to enhance their threat awareness and preparedness relating to potential physical…

Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs) serve their communities in so many different. People gather there to do all sorts of things, to include worship, but also to socialize, attend classes, teach their children, provide community-based services like job search support, receive mental health services, and other activities. Many FBOs also serve the global community by embarking on mission trips. Though the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed the ability of many FBOs to travel on mission trips, the hopeful news of a global vaccine program would open the door for mission trips to resume or accelerate soon.

Mission preparedness is very similar to preparedness…

FB-ISAO was founded in 2018 by a small group of dedicated professionals who believe that information sharing for and within the community faith is vital to enhancing the preparedness, resiliency and security of this community — “this is important”. The premise is simple — collaboration makes everyone stronger. Through trusted collaboration, members can better secure their faith-based organizations.

By choosing to participate in an information sharing organization like FB-ISAO, members have the benefit of receiving trusted information, analysis, solutions and the ability to enhance physical and cybersecurity across their community and nation. Collaborating with each other is crucial since:

Like the Grinch who stole Christmas, cybercriminals long for this time of year, to steal money and information from those of good cheer

By Jennifer Lyn Walker

Instead of getting ahead on our holiday shopping, FB-ISAO wishes to get ahead on our holiday shopping cyber scam reminders — and we aren’t the only ones. The FBI is also among those forewarning of folly this holiday season.

Even those accustomed to shopping online in 2020 may be looking forward to escaping the drone of the past year by indulging in some lighthearted online holiday shopping for their loved ones and forget this year’s National Cybersecurity Awareness Month theme to do their part and #BeCyberSmart. …

With the ongoing Pandemic, the election, and severe weather events, it is easy to overlook the upcoming holiday season which is rapidly approaching. In years past, crowds would gather at Faith-Based Organizations’ (FBO) locations and in public spaces for celebrations of the season. These seasonal festivities bring good feelings but also potential threats from attackers who see the larger crowds and soft targets as an opportunity to promote their ideology via mass causality attacks. Whether it is through a vehicle as a weapon / vehicle ramming attack such as in Berlin in 2016, or a knife attack as occurred last…

And while many are thinking pumpkin spice and everything nice, in the cybersecurity realm October has become synonymous with National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM). But given cyber is part of everyday life and a cost of doing business in today’s world, NCSAM isn’t just for cybersecurity, it’s for everybody. Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility among all people. In fact, NCSAM was initially launched in 2004 to “ensure every American has the resources they need to stay safer and more secure online.” …

Certainly, 2020 will go down in the books as one very full and challenging year. From the pandemic to protests to one of the most active hurricane seasons in recent history (and one that is on pace to potentially be the most active season since records began in 1851), no time has better emphasized the importance of being ready for disasters and whatever else may come. September is National Preparedness Month, as noted in this year’s White House Proclamation on National Preparedness Month 2020.

“During National Preparedness Month, we pause to reflect on the importance of mitigating the effects of…

The COVID-19 global pandemic is a complex and blended threat impacting members and the broader faith-based and charity community in numerous ways. FB-ISAO’s Threat and Incident Response Group (TIG) continues to assess the ongoing threats and risks to our community and has made the following updates to our Threat Level Assessments:

The TIG has determined to maintain the Physical Threat Level at “ SEVERE.” SEVERE means an event is highly likely. The TIG will continue to assess the Physical Threat Level and provide updates accordingly. …

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency, Infrastructure Security Division has published a new website dedicated to the security of Faith-Based Organizations. The website hosts tools and resources of great value for FBOs and the broader community of faith.

CISA has aptly named the website “Faith Based Organization-Houses of Worship (FBO-HOW)” — the website can be accessed at www.cisa.gov/faith-based-organizations-houses-worship. The self-assessment tool that CISA is making available on the site can be accessed here: https://www.cisa.gov/publication/houses-worship-security-self-assessment. The tables in the document are designed to show a range of security and protection, from the lowest level of security that offers minimal protection (red) to a very high level of security that provides a greatly enhanced level of protection (green).

The threat of hostile events has been and will remain an enduring threat for FBOs. As we continue through the COVID-19 pandemic…
